Located in Georgia’s Old Capitol of Milledgeville (Baldwin County, Georgia), Cedar Lane is the burial ground for thousands of former patients of Central State Hospital. Located on the corner of Lawrence Rd and Central Shop Rd, a field of iron markers for which the cemetery is famous for can easily be seen. Each marker has been moved from its original location and includes a unique number representing the life of a former patient.
Date of visit: 7 August 2018
Although the cemetery was restored by the Georgia Consumer Council in the late 1990's the condition of the cemetery remains poor. Most stone grave markers are on the ground and/or are broken or buried. The graves that the 2,000 iron markers belong to stretch away into the forest at the back of the property or exist in nearby burial grounds and actually represent 25,000 individuals.
Burials from approximately 1843 to 1959.
