ARCHAEOLOGY
Our staff archaeologist has spent the last several decades documenting sites throughout Middle Georgia and identifying thousands of artifacts for the public. We have experience working on prehistoric sites thousands of years old, as well as on historic sites in both rural and urban settings. From Archaic lithic scatters and Mississippian mound sites to grist mill ruins and abandoned cemeteries, the MGPA is the best choice for your project.
HISTORIC PRESERVATION
Documenting and preserving Middle Georgia's historic sites & cemeteries is at the very heart of what the MGPA is all about. But we can't do this without the financial support of the folks who truly care. We also seek out grants to assist local historical societies and concerned landowners investigate such sites.
If you know of endangered historic resources in one of the 23 counties in our network, please let us hear from you!
CEMETERY ASSESSMENTS & DELINEATIONS
The MGPA began its ongoing Middle Georgia Cemetery Assessment Survey in the autumn months of 2020. Since then we've made field inspections of over 200 family burial grounds, churchyards, and cemeteries, studying each for condition, grave maker information, maintenance issues, and other variables.
Our staff archaeologist has also spent a quarter of a century delineating the boundaries of rural and urban cemeteries, and providing professional historical reports with maps showing all the graves located during each project. Please consider helping us financially so we can continue this important work throughout our 23-county network.
HISTORICAL RESEARCH
The MGPA specializes in following the historic paper trails left behind by our forebears. Whether a project calls for original archival research of primary sources, locating pertinent plats and historic maps, or knowing the cultural history of the unique region we serve, we are second to none in the experience and professionalism needed for completing the project that is closest to your heart.
