The Old Clinton War Days is an annual event held by the Old Clinton Historical Society. This year was the 41st reenactment and was held on April 30th - May 1st. Clinton is the former county seat of Jones County.
One day honors the Battle of Sunshine Church (a win for the Confederacy on July 31, 1864) the other honors the Battle of Griswoldville (a win for the Union on November 22, 1864). Neither of the battles took place in Clinton, however the battles were the most significant ones in the Civil War that took place in Middle Georgia. These photos are from the reenactment of the Battle of Sunshine Church.
The historical marker for the Battle of Sunshine Church is located at the rebuilt (1875) church in Round Oak, Georgia on GA Rte 11 south of Jackson Road. The historical marker and memorial for the Battle of Griswoldville is located on Baker Road about 0.5 miles north east of Old Griswoldville Road in Griswoldville. There are other historical markers with information on the Civil War in Middle Georgia and the Confederate Pistol Factory located nearby on Henderson Road north of Griswoldville Road.
This is a great event for the family or anyone interested in the history of Jones County or Middle Georgia. The reenactors are safe and professional and eagerly share their history and craft with curious spectators. You may want to bring ear plugs for the young ones as the artillery can be pretty loud at times.
